In the southeast of Serbia , some 30 km from the Bulgarian border , lies the small town of Pirot . It's a town with some 44,000 inhabitants , but the whole municipality has about 70,000 inhabitants . The international highway E-70 goes through the town , so that everybody who goes through Serbia towards Bulgaria , Turkey and the Near East sees Pirot . On the north side is the Stara planina mountain , on the south side the Suva planina mountain and through the town runs the river Nišava (pronounced Nishava) . Below are some pictures from Pirot and the surrounding area .
